On August 29, a group of 16 new hires from both companies worked at the Habitat School site in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, where they crafted wooden wall panels to be combined with reinforced concrete structures. Despite the summer heat, the participants dedicated themselves to the hands-on work, contributing directly to the creation of homes for housing-vulnerable groups, including newlyweds without homes, multicultural and large families, people with disabilities, and descendants of independence patriots.
Constructing “Homes of Hope” with Precision and Care
The volunteer site, located in Mokcheon-eup, Cheonan, serves both as an educational facility for wooden house construction and as a workshop for producing components of modular wooden homes. The materials carefully crafted by the volunteers will be used to build safe and stable homes for families in need. Notably, the volunteers from both companies earned praise from Habitat staff for their strong commitment to safety. Although most participants had little to no prior experience in construction work—and the tasks involved handling heavy materials in challenging conditions—they demonstrated exemplary awareness by bringing and wearing personal protective equipment such as helmets, safety vests, and safety shoes. Applying the safety principles they had learned, they actively participated in carrying, cutting, and assembling materials, as well as hammering components into place.
A Meaningful First Step in Corporate Social Responsibility
As part of their onboarding training, new employees at Asia Cement and Halla Cement participate in this annual house-building volunteer program, gaining firsthand experience in the value of sharing and community service. Participants reflected on their experience, saying, “It was our first time taking part in a construction volunteer activity, so we were a bit nervous at first. But it was incredibly rewarding to realize that even our small efforts could make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.” They added, “If given the opportunity, we would gladly participate again.” Sharing can be defined as offering both material and emotional support to others without expecting anything in return. In that sense, the “House of Hope” initiative carried out by the new employees of Asia Cement and Halla Cement stands as a warm and genuine example of what true giving looks like.
