Halla Cement is strategically expanding its export footprint in Latin American markets, notably in Peru and Chile. While English remains the global lingua franca, Spanish is the pulse of business in these regions. To strengthen client relationships and empower its staff, Halla Cement has introduced a specialized Spanish language program for its Purchasing & Export Team.
This initiative goes beyond mere linguistics; it is designed to foster a genuine understanding of Latin American culture. Since January, team members have been immersing themselves in bi-weekly sessions led by a native instructor.
Navigating the Rigors of a New Language
The team commits to three hours of intensive study every week. To ensure steady progress, each module concludes with oral assessments and quizzes that evaluate their real-world conversational skills.
The learning curve, however, was steep. For the four team members, Spanish was entirely unchartered territory, evoking the "growing pains" of their early days learning English. They were immediately met with linguistic structures that differ fundamentally from both Korean and English. The complexities of Spanish grammar—gendered nouns, noun-adjective agreement, and intricate verb conjugations—made it clear that mastery would require significant effort.
Faced with these challenges, the team adopted a rigorous approach to memorization. Kang Seung-gyu, Head of the Purchasing & Export Team, noted that the phonetic and syntactic differences from English are so vast that consistency is key. "Missing even a single week makes it difficult to keep up, so we’ve made it a point to thoroughly internalize every lesson," he explained.
“At first, the sheer volume of new vocabulary and grammar was overwhelming," Kang admitted. "But after ten months, those patterns have become second nature. Now, when we visit our clients' websites or review international bid documents, the Spanish text no longer feels like a barrier—it’s a tool we can actually use.”
Winning Hearts with a Simple Greeting
The true value of their hard work was revealed in March, just two months into the program, when a Peruvian client visited Halla Cement.
“Our Spanish was still in its infancy, but we prepared a welcome message in our guests' native tongue," a team member recalled. "They were genuinely touched, mentioning that no other facility they had visited had offered such a warm, personalized welcome. Later, during a business trip to Peru, being able to engage in basic conversation with locals really brought home the impact of our training.”
As they enter their tenth month of study, the team is moving with newfound confidence. They encourage their colleagues across the Asia Cement family to embrace the challenge of a new language. They believe that curiosity and cultural openness—even when not strictly required for a role—can yield profound professional rewards.
In an increasingly saturated domestic market, Halla Cement’s Purchasing & Export Team is turning the "unfamiliar" into a competitive advantage. Their dedication to lifelong learning is more than just a personal achievement; it is a strategic stepping stone into the "blue ocean" of the Latin American market.
